Few places in India are at once so traveller-friendly and yet so enchanting and hassle-free as mountain-framed Leh. Dotted with stupas and crumbling mudbrick houses, the Old Town is dominated by a dagger of steep rocky ridge topped by an imposing Tibetan-style palace and fort. Beneath, the bustling bazaar area is draped in a thick veneer of tour agencies, souvenir shops and tandoori-pizza restaurants, but a web of lanes quickly fans out into a green suburban patchwork of irrigated barley fields. Here, gushing streams and narrow footpaths link traditionally styled Ladakhi homes and hotels that feature flat roofs, sturdy walls and ornate wooden window frames. Leh’s a place that’s all too easy to fall in love with – but take things very easy on arrival as the altitude requires a few days' acclimatisation before you can safely start enjoying the area's gamut of adventure activities.... Things to care about
Only post paid networks work in Ladakh, pre paids do not work, Also there is a very inefficient internet network in the area so try not to depend so much on it.One of the biggest challenge and threat to travelers visiting Ladakh is that of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Acute Mountain Sickness occurs due to scarcity of oxygen at high altitude, and inability of our bodies to adjust to low oxygen content in air. Do make it a point to rest if you have any symptoms of AMS like : dizziness, nausea, headache, fast heart rate, apnea, sleeping difficulty & vomiting. There is more likeliness of flight passengers to Leh to have these symptoms.
Your body should be physically conditioned to deal with tough weather conditions and unexpected situations. A rigorous workout regime that includes breathing exercises can help you better survive high altitude places with limited oxygen supply.
